48. Sakanoshita from Tokaido Gojusantsugi by Hiroshige

Station #48: In olden times, the beauty of the rugged mountain ranges in this area attracted many visitors from Kyoto, just five stations away. Travelers enjoyed the spectacular view of Mt. Fudesute from a teahouse located on the mountain pass. A story tells of how the master painter, Motonobu Kano (1476 - 1559), was very impressed with the beauty of the scene. But he was not able to capture the majesty of the mountain in his painting and finally threw away his brushes in despair. That is the origin of the mountain's name: "fude" means "brush" and "sute" is taken from the verb "discard" or "throw away."
