1. Shinagawa from Tokaido Gojusantsugi by Hiroshige

Station #1: After five miles of marching through the suburbs of Edo, travelers arrived at Shinagawa in full morning light. There were many teahouses and restaurants famous for conger eels. Records of the time say that the town was always full of travelers. It was also the major port for all food and manufactured goods entering Edo from all corners of the country. The city was known as a popular picnic spot at cherry blossom time. Near Shinagawa is Sengakuji Temple, home of the graves of the 47 Ronin and their former daimyo, Lord Asano. In December 1702 these loyal warriors avenged the disgrace and death of Lord Asano. They were the inspiration for the great Kabuki classic, Chushingura
