Station #2: Now travelers were past the suburbs of Edo and into the countryside. The Tama (Jewel) River was the first ferry crossing for outbound travelers and a welcome site to those returning to Edo. You could always meet interesting people at the ferry - traveling medicine salesmen from Toyama Shrine, pilgrim groups on a circuit to visit 33 or 88 Buddhist temples, merchants carrying fine pottery to rural tea ceremony associations, or teachers of Confucian doctrine transferring to provincial schools. Once across the ferry, inn keepers were ready to tempt you with the local delicacies - clams, octopus and squid.
