14. Yoshiwara from Tokaido Gojusantsugi by Hiroshige

Station #14: In the eyes of the Japanese, Mt. Fuji eclipses all other mountains in beauty, grandeur and its ability to inspire awe. It was said to change every time one saw it, since its appearance changed with the season and time of day. This section of the Tokaido was known as "Left-viewing Fuji." Here travelers got a new view of Mt. Fuji - from the left. When traveling "up" to Kyoto, Mt. Fuji is normally on the traveler's right. But here the road twists and suddenly Mt. Fuji appears on the traveler's left. Quirks like this delighted those on a long journey. Hiroshige illustrates a riding style known as sanpokojin (san means three), an adult rides in the middle with one child on the left and one child on the rights.
