15. Kanbara from Tokaido Gojusantsugi by Hiroshige

Station #15: The village sleeps silently buried beneath a deep blanket of snow. Travelers and peasants plod their way home, one with a paper umbrella and the other two in the straw raincoats used by farmers. While this is one of the world's favorite prints from the series, no place exists like this, except in Hiroshige's mind - snow rarely falls in this area. Although Hiroshige traveled the highway in August, he showed the stations in all the seasons of the year. Kanbara did not have any famous scenic spots. He used an imaginative snowfall to make it a memorable landscape.
