This course is a survey of the arts of Non-Western cultures: Africa, India and Southeast Asia, China, Japan, Korea, Oceania, and Native America. We will study their artistic achievements from pre-historic through contemporary times as expressed in painting, sculpture, prints, and calligraphy as well as architecture, gardens, decorative arts, graphic arts and photography. We will analyze how politics, religion, economics, social organization, artistic influences and international trade shaped the major themes in each culture's artistic traditions. We will also explore the many reasons why people create art and how their motivations are alike and different across the world and across history.
